Called Guahan by the natives, Guam is an island located in the western North Pacific Ocean, about three-quarters of the way between the U.S. State of Hawaii and the Philippine archipelago. It is the largest and southernmost island in the Mariana Islands archipelago, and is a territory of the United States. It is popular as a tourist destination due to its beautiful and pristine sandy beaches, as well as the culture of the Chamorros.
Where to go
Underwater World Guam – Underwater World Guam is one of the longest tunnel-aquariums in the world and the only oceanarium in the United States territory of Guam. The aquarium opened in 1999 and has more than 2,000 animals representing more than 80 different species. Most animals included in the aquarium are native to Guam and the surrounding Marianas Islands, which makes it unique and exciting. The aquarium is managed and partly owned by U.S Aquarium team (USAT) and is located in the commune of Tumon. The main exhibit here is a 319-foot-long tunnel under a 3-million-litre salt-water aquarium. The said tank has more than 24 sharks, a shovelnose guitarfish, two giant groupers, and four stingrays.
Dulce Nombre de Maria Cathedral Basilica – located in Hagatna, the Dulce Nombre de Maria Cathedral Basilica is a structure located on the site where the first Catholic Church on Guam was constructed in 1669 under the guidance of Padere San Vitores. The present building looms above the palm trees and is a familiar landmark in the capital.
Ritidian Point – known as the most beautiful beach in Guam, Ritidian Point is located in the northern-most part of the island of Guam, within the Guam National Wildlife Refuge. It is one of Guam's most pristine sandy beaches, and if you're opting for some quiet time, you may visit the beach during the weekdays as it is virtually empty – with the exception of a few fishermen.
From the Antonio B. Won Pat International Airport of Guam, travellers may visit countries within the East-South-east region of Asia. Countries where travellers may fly in include Taiwan, Japan, Australia, South Korea, the Philippines, China, and its special administrative region, Hong Kong. Travellers may also visit some islands in the Pacific region, including Saipan, Rota, and other islands of the Federated States of Micronesia. Most airports in the Pacific region, especially in Micronesia and others, are only utilised by tourists, so don't be surprised to find only a few locals within the airports.
The only long-haul flight from Guam would be the flight going to Honolulu, the capital of the U.S. State of Hawaii. The service is provided by United Airlines, one of the major carriers from the United States. It is understandable that the island is connected to one of the states of the U.S., as Guam is a non-self-governing territory of the States. Furthermore, the United States Armed Forces make for the second largest source of income for Guam, as the troops have settlements and bases within the island.
