Why fly with American Airlines

American Airlines check in

Online check-in is available on the American Airlines website 24 hours before a flight. This closes 45 minutes (domestic flights) or 90 minutes (international flights) before take-off.

For airport check-in, AA recommends arriving 90 minutes before a domestic flight, while international travellers should generally aim to arrive 3 hours before. Remember that security at American airports is stricter than most countries in the world.

American Airlines baggage allowances & fees

American Airlines allows passengers to check in 5 bags for flights to/from Central and South America and up to 10 bags for domestic flights or flights across the Atlantic and Pacific. For economy class passengers, there's a maximum weight limit of 23kg per bag and a limit of 158cm for your bag's total dimensions.

The price for your baggage depends on where you're flying and whether you're a member of any frequent flyer schemes. A domestic flight, for example, starts at US$25 per bag. Flights to Asia, however, have 2 free bags before a $200/bag fee is introduced.

A carry-on bag (max 56x36x23cm) plus a personal item (max 45x35x20cm) are allowed onto the plane.

American Airlines seat selection

Seat selection is free for passengers when they book a flight with American Airlines, however a fee is imposed for seat upgrades. How much you pay depends on the length of your flight, but special seats may give you extra leg room, priority boarding or more favourable locations on the plane.
