Virgin Australia flights & airline information

Flying with Virgin Australia

Virgin Australia is Australia's second biggest airline after Qantas. Its main hub is Brisbane Airport, with other major hubs in Melbourne and Sydney.

Founded in 1999 as Virgin Blue, today Virgin Australia is the largest of the 4 airlines in the global Virgin group. It has flights to 52 destinations, including 29 cities across Australia.

Why fly Virgin Australia?

Virgin Australia offers a wider choice of fare options compared to most airlines, particularly on short-haul international flights. This gives passengers greater flexibility to choose the right fare for their preferences and price range, from no-frills economy flights to Virgin's full-service business class cabin, 'The Business.'

Why Fly with Virgin Australia

Virgin Australia baggage allowances and fees

Most Virgin Australia fares include a baggage allowance, the exception being Go fares on short-haul international flights.

Depending on your fare class and Velocity membership tier, this may be 1, 2 or 3 checked items weighing up to 23kg or 32kg each.

The total linear dimensions of each item (length + width + height) must not exceed 140cm for domestic and short-haul flights or 158cm for long-haul flights.

All passengers are permitted up to 7kg of carry-on luggage, comprising 2 small bags or briefcases or 1 small bag plus 1 garment bag. International business travellers can take 2 pieces weighing 7kg each plus a personal item such as a handbag or laptop bag.

Virgin Australia seating

All passengers have the option to choose a seat when booking their flight or checking in. The best seats are reserved for Velocity frequent flyers, with unclaimed seats being released to other passengers between 48 and 12 hours before departure. Families with children will always be seated together.

If you want a seat with extra leg room, these can be purchased when you make your booking. Prices start from AU$20 for domestic flights or AU$150 for long-haul international flights.

Virgin Australia check in

Virgin Australia passengers can check in for their flights online or at the airport.

For domestic flights, online check-in opens 48 hours before and closes 45 minutes before your scheduled departure time. International check-in is available from 24 hours to 90 minutes before your flight.

If you're checking in at the airport, counters close 30 minutes before a domestic flight and about 1 hour before an international flight, though it's recommended you check in earlier to be safe. Brisbane Airport also has self-service check-in kiosks.

Priority check-in may be available if you're flying premium economy or business class, or if you're a Silver, Gold or Platinum Velocity member.
